Assumption Reflection 2024

As we reflect on the Assumption, please enjoy this reflection by Daniella Zsupan-Jerome from the August 2024 issue of Give Us this Day.

Body and Soul

Daniella Zsupan-Jerome

My preschooler lived through a phase recently where she removed her socks at school. One day she came from school with a bandage neatly wrapped around her toe. I banged it in the door, it was bleeding and I asked God to help me, she reported. In her world, God is the one who cares deeply for her injured toe, and I hope she still holds on to this divine image.

The liturgical texts for the Solemnity of the Assumption also reveal to us a God who cares for us, both body and soul. The texts are mindful of Our Lady’s clothing, head, and feet. We reflect on her being pregnant and giving birth. Her bodiliness is an integral part of her story, from beginning to end. As we look with hope at how she walks before us, we see that her bodiliness remains integral to her eternal life in heaven. God assumes her body into its final dignity and glory.

So much of our pain and suffering is located in the body, and here, we find God’s tenderness. Whether a stubbed toe, an eating disorder, physical or mental illness, aging, or a terminal diagnosis, our bodily reality teaches us about finitude and suffering. God’s tender love is attentive to our physicality. Through the cross, God meets us in these human moments. In the resurrection and the assumption, God transforms the body into a sign of life and hope.
